L’Arabesco is ideally located to reach the famous Vallone delle Ferriere, a protected area where, in addition to examples of Mediterranean scrub, you can still admire splendid specimens of Woodwardia radicans, a giant fern from the Tertiary period that can reach up to 1.80 m in height. The trail will also lead you to the suggestive waterfalls created by the Canneto stream at the end of its path and will finally offer a dip into history, leading you to the ancient ironworks (ferriere) that give the valley its name and to the mills that produced the famous handmade Amalfi paper. Evidence of the glorious past of the Maritime Republic, founded in 839, can be seen first and foremost in the famous Tabula Amalphitana, a maritime code now exhibited in the civic museum of the ancient Arsenals of the Republic. The same museum structure housed, centuries ago, the Amalfi shipyard, where ships were built that guaranteed famous victories for the fleet, such as the Battle of Ostia in 849 against the Arabs. A celebratory event for the four maritime republics is the Historical Regatta, held every year in June in one of the republics: Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa, and Venice. During this historical and sporting reenactment, crews from the four locations compete for the title by racing in their respective boats. The event is completed by the historical parade, where participants march through the city streets wearing period costumes. The cathedral is the monument that, more than any other, testifies to the wealth of commercial and cultural exchanges maintained by the ancient Republic, as it is the result of a blend of Arabic and Norman styles. It consists of two basilicas, the oldest of which dates back to the 6th century. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Andrew, whose relics it houses. The saint is celebrated on November 30, while the anniversary of the miracle he performed is celebrated on June 27.
